The HTTP referrer is read client-side. If it matches a known AI domain (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini.google.com, etc.), the visit is flagged.

GA4 event fires

An ai_referral_visit custom event fires with the source, landing page, and page title attached. Visible in GA4 Explore → filter by event name.

Source stored for lead attribution

The AI source is saved to localStorage. When the visitor fills in any form — contact, booking, quote — the source travels with the submission.

Server-side log written

A structured JSON log line is written on Vercel. Every AI referral has a timestamp, source, landing page, and IP — searchable in Vercel Logs or piped to a log drain.

What is AI referral traffic?
